the city that never sleeps

yesterday as i walked out of school there were a bunch of people sitting on the steps drinking beer. little things like that are always popping up to remind me this is europe =)

school was good yesterday. i understood a lot and my teacher is the nicest person i ever met. and he came up to me in private and said that if i needed help he will explain it in english, and if i want to say something and i have a hard time speaking in spanish i can speak in english. how nice! but i told him i don't want any special treatment and i want to try and speak in spanish, i'm just a little slow. but everyday i'm understanding more and more.

last night me and marta went out for a night on the town and this place is so cool at night. there are hundreds of people on the streets at 2 in the morning and it's just so exciting! i get excited over the littlest things but it's so fun. we met up with one of her friends from school who has been living here for a year. she's from croatia and she was so much fun! very talkative and outgoing and she just got a job so she was ready to celebrate. she took us to this place called El Gato Negro and it was nice because it wasn't touristy, all locals. the atmosphere was very cool and they had good food and drinks. i had REAL calamari, even though Ana told me not to have it because it's nothing like american calamari. but it was so good! it didn't even taste fishy but it also wasn't just all fried breading.

at the bar they were making all these kinds of shots i've never seen, with fire and candy and marshmallows. Ana said that they don't really know what they're doing, you just tell them what you want it to taste like and they put something together.

we went to a couple other places after that and just walked around the city because even at night there is so much to see. we were walking down this side street and all of the sudden this little band comes around the corner like a parade and they were just playing through the streets.

today is the Red Bull Air Show and it's at the beach. i was reading about it and they said over 1 million people show up for it! it's just a huge party on the beach and they have airplane shows and other stuff i'm not sure about. this city sure likes to party. marta gave me this pamphlet that has all the "hot spots" to go out at night like clubs and bars and she said she got it from her school. awesome! but i need to go get ready for the beach so chao!
